Street Life in Black and White
To me, black and white street photography evokes the timelessness of a nearly 200-year old medium that has evolved from glass plates to silver emulsion film to pixels. I believe monochrome photographs enable the viewer to glean a better sense of who the people in the image really are, even as they’re revealed, not in realistic flesh tones, but shades of gray. It’s a pretty neat trick. City streets are noisy, and people’s thoughts are private. But black and white photographs give us a clue as to what is really going on, don’t they?
